Plastic and its impacts
Plastic is hurting our planet
The proliferation of plastic waste has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental crises of our time. Every year each person throws away an average of 120 single use plastic water bottles in the UK alone, and only 45% of that is recycled, the rest left to choke our oceans, harm wildlife, and contaminate our food chain as they break down into microplastics.
The alternative (for us at least) is obvious; to provide consumers with the simple alternative of steel bottles. They are durable and represent a fundamental shift from disposable to sustainable consumption.
We have attempted to provide a small comparison to help you make your choice:
Plastic | Steel |
Depending on quality and use, can last up to 5 years | Can last years, decades or even a lifetime with proper care |
Petroleum-based production and low recycling rates both contribute to pollution, along with a higher lifetime carbon footprint due to replacement frequency |
There is a higher initial production impact and carbon footprint, but this is offset by longevity and recyclability, resulting in a much lower lifetime impact. |
Will leach BPA and other chemicals, over time, especially exacerbated by UV light and heat | This is an inert material with no risk of leaching. |
Lightweight | Slightly heavier than the alternative |
Can retain flavours and odours, develop staining, melt or warp at high temperatures | Resistant to leaks, stains, and heat |
